Hellen Bakhoff: The Beauty of Biology

7 June – 15 July

To be opened by Anne Hamilton-Bruce Saturday 9 June at 5.30pm

In high school Hellen Bakhoff loved to make drawings of the view through the microscope. Later, teaching Home Economics gave her the opportunity to express her love of fine pattern and detail in free machine embroidery, subsequently expanding her range into art quilting and felting.

Now retired from teaching Hellen owns and manages the Linhay Gallery in Auburn, offering a range of textile exhibitions and workshops, and making beautiful artworks of her own in quilted textile, enhanced by stitching and beading.

In "The Beauty of Biology" Hellen returns to her fascination with scientific imagery, making work from images of her years battling cancer.

During treatment Hellen discovered the beauty of the images of her own cells. For this exhibition she has contacted medical institutions and obtained permission for further images to inspire her work.

This she sees as “not a morbid reminder but a celebration of survival. Creating something beautiful out of adversity gives me such great pleasure that I am happy to share it.”

Her work also draws attention to the quality of medical research that results in so many lives saved.
