Getting Here & Around

Driving time from Adelaide to the Clare Valley is around 90 minutes. Bring your own vehicle or hire one in Adelaide, then head north. The most direct route is to follow Port Wakefield Road onto the Northern Expressway and turn left onto Horrocks Highway just after the bypass to Gawler. A coach service operates between Adelaide, the Clare Valley and other regional localities.

The Clare Valley Aerodrome is located on RM Williams Way 14 kilometres north of the township and 10 minutes from the picturesque Clare Valley wine region. Pickups and car tours can be arranged from the aerodrome to explore the region.

Driving your own car is by far the easiest way to get around the region. However, if you’d like to learn more about the Clare Valley, there are several guided tours available, including specialist winery tours. Ask at the Clare Valley Wine, Food and Tourism Centre.

The Clare Valley offers a network of driving trails. Pick up a map from one of the Visitor Information Centres in the region. There are also several scenic drives through the Clare Valley wine country and remote saltbush country near Burra via the Goyder Driving Trails, World’s End Circuit or Dare’s Hill Circuit.

The Clare Valley provides a picture book backdrop for a leisurely bike ride. In a wine district renowned for its Riesling, it’s only fitting for the Clare Valley’s popular cycling trail to share the same name.

Weaving its way through the heart of the Clare Valley, the 33 kilometre Riesling Trail and 19 kilometre Rattler Trail are sublimely photogenic, linking many picturesque towns and wineries.

Bikes can be hired from operators in Clare and Auburn and also at many bed and breakfasts in the region.

Remember to obey signs, wear your helmet and be mindful of the blood alcohol limit.

For more of a challenge why not try part of the Mawson Trail which links into the Riesling Trail, or for some different scenery try the Rattler Trail.

If you’d rather explore the region on foot, there are a number of self-guided town and nature walks available across the region including the Riesling and Rattler trails. The Clare Valley is home to Conservation Parks and a number of reserves, all with their own walking trails.
